"Three Decades of PV Experience, Reliability and Energy Production Results"

How many PV professionals today know where the sun rises and sets?

Arizona's first PV High-rise - Optima Biltmore Towers Solar Arbors included the redesign of these PV panels and some creative design work. Understanding the impact of sun angles and shading are often under-addressed.

The focus in the PV industry as of 2011 has primarily become delivering the least cost AKA Cheapest installation cost system. This creates a dilemma because when cost is the only concern, there are no real needs for experience or skilled designers or installers. All you need is some very basic knowledge to meet a safety standard which has absolutely nothing to do with how much energy you produce.

In conversation with hundreds of designers, installers, and others in the PV industry, it is interesting to see how many have not educated themselves to even know where the sun rises and sets each day. Understanding the apparent motion of the sun does not get any more basic in the solar world.

With that in mind, how much depth is going into your project?
  • Would you hire a pre-med student to do your heart surgery?
  • How about if they gave you a really great price?

The answer is probably not.

Yet, because we do not yet have the standards in the PV industry to measure skill and ability, you will need to do your homework and be very specific in what you want and what your system will deliver for you. Because there are very few good designers and installers in the industry at this time, you will only get what you demand and pay for.

If you don’t demand quality, reliability, and reasonably high AC energy output for your PV project, you probably will not get it.

If you feel competition is critical in the business world, have them compete for the best output, reliability, life and performance. That is where the value is!

PV is about the money!

You invest in a technology to get a better ROI or IIR.

What we have learned is that a few of the right checks and balances may be in order if you really expect to get what you are paying for.

With all the assumptions and myths in the industry, does least cost have any meaning to the potential PV buyer?

In short ask yourself:

What decisions will you make in maximizing system energy output?

We believe that what you really need to be buying is AC kilowatt hours and not excuses after the fact.

Unlike most of the industry, we believe that if you are looking for value, what you are really seeking is the greatest number of Kilowatt hours of AC power produced per dollar spent over 20 years. We call this the PV system’s true system performance or PV Performance.

The process and the outcome in buying kilowatt hours of AC power versus DC watts, is very different.

The fact is that you have never bought a DC watt in your life and probably never will.

Buying a DC watt would be like buying an inch! An inch of what, and for how long?

In PV, every product has a different value for their DC watt.

That is because the DC watt measure is only under one particular condition, Standard Test Conditions, STC, and not over the range of conditions the cells and panels operate in. Imagine how difficult life would be if your ruler or speedometer gave you a different results for every different temperature and level of sunlight?
(Please see our glossary of terms for STC.)

You buy AC kilowatt hours from your utility company and that is a finite measureable product that has been on the market for over 100 years.

You need to ask a substantial number of detailed questions and understand what the answers are, and what they mean. Few people and organizations understand the questions much less than the answers.

We find it disturbing to realize that most of the questions below are never asked or answered and most PV companies can not answer them. Yet, they will tell you they are the best, and that they have the best product, and usually that hey are the cheapest. Please consider the questions seriously. It’s really all about your money and what you get for it!

Then if you are interested, we can discuss your questions and get the right answers together.
